The deed is done

So last night I bottled my first batch of beer and out of the whole brewing process this is definitely the most longest and boring step in the process.  But I’m sure next time I will be a lot faster.  With like everything else in the process, sanitizing everything is number one priority and it defintely takes the longest.  Anyone have any good tips of cleaning out a glass carboy =)

You can buy high pressure sprayers that hook up to your kitchen faucet, but I just use the old-fashioned method of hot water with some soap or sanitizer, and slosh it around for a while. Seems to work just fine. Then again, I don’t use a carboy for primary fermentation, so I’ve never dealt with the krausen crud that’s typically in there.

And I agree…bottling sucks.

Can’t give you any advice on the carboy as I don’t use one either but as far as bottling goes, some days I enjoy it and other days it just sucks! All depends on how I feel that particular day!

Congrats on finally getting to the bottling step though! Now it’s just a waiting game!

Using the (recommended) bottling tree and the EZ-Cap swing tops makes bottling as painless as it gets. I can sanitize and fill an entire batch in a little over an hour. Of course, I use 10-12 one liter EZ-Caps, which takes care of at least half the batch. The rest goes in 1/2 liter EZ-Caps, and some in plastic (PET) amber screw tops to use as ‘give aways’ to friends. (the lightness of the plastic bottles cuts shipping costs as well). Like the others, I don’t use a glass carboy .. but if I did, I’d be tempted to ‘blast’ away the crud using the high pressure bottle cleaner that attaches to my faucet. Even though you have a non-standard faucet, you CAN get (from Home Depot) an end of hose brass valved hose big .. which would allow you to control the water right where you are working. It would make using the ‘blaster’ and/or your chiller much easier. If it were me, I’d just change out the faucet .. a 30 min. job which anyone can do. (Delta and other faucet makers have great instructions and online vids to show how easy it is).

Give that stout 2 weeks to carbonate, but it will be much better after an entire month. Let us know when you pop open your first bottle!
Cheers

To elaborate on Bill’s point above, I too have a faucet that doesnt play nice with adapters, however if you unscrew the aerator cover on your faucet and take it to Lowes or Home Depot they have a display there where you can thread yours onto different sizes to find the adapter you need. If i can find out the part number of mine I will post it here. They make several sizes dude so i’m positive you can find one without ripping out your faucet :)

Got it! The one that fits mine is 2/9C Hose Thread Adapter, available at both HD and Lowes. Like I said dude, i’m positive you can find the right adapter for your sink, no worries!

Hey Sick! Well I put one bottle in the fridge and tried it the other day. Only thing I can say is well it’s not ready and I’m not real sure it will ever taste good. Hey but it’s the first batch. Hopefully batch two goes better. I’ve learned some lessons.

Probably right before the new year or right after. It’s soon. I need to get enough courage up again to be honest. =)

Post how it went. How it tastes. Get that first brew out of the way.

Onto brew number two. Hey, just drop me an email. I’d be more than happy to talk about how to simplify and streamline.

Whatever you do. Do not throw away that beer. Time can really help a beer taste better.

Congrats on your first brew! :-) That took a ton of prep and time to get through. I’m sure.

Fill the carboy with Starsan, shake the hell out of it and then let it sit full for a day. Empty the starsan solution into another container (you can reuse this until its cloudy) and you’re all set. Main thing to remember is NOT TO FEAR THE FOAM.

Bottling sucks, and thats why I went will kegging. Now I have a freezer converted to a kegerator in the garage, and have 6 5 gallon kegs.
